The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) seeks a mid-to-senior level research faculty member to direct the Center for Rehabilitation Science and Engineering (CERSE). CERSE is a research-related center at VCU designed to foster interdisciplinary research, innovation, collaborative potential, and resource development in the field of rehabilitation (e.g., rehabilitation medicine, allied health, engineering, social work, education, etc.). The mission of CERSE is to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities through maximizing independence in living skills, recreation and employment activities. CERSE provides rehabilitation leadership to the Commonwealth of Virginia through innovative education, evidence-based research, and outcome-focused patient care. The center has a rich history of developing funded research programs, producing new knowledge, and innovating clinical practice in the rehabilitation sciences.
The successful applicant for the position of Executive Director would be expected to (a) contribute to education initiatives associated with CERSE, (b) develop research programs, resources, and research-related infrastructure, (c) manage the center’s daily operations, (d) cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships within the institution and among community partners, and (e) advocate for the best interests of individuals living with disabilities and their supportive communities.
Position requirements include a doctoral degree in a rehabilitation-related field (e.g., medicine, psychology, engineering, etc.), eligibility for the academic rank of Associate or Full Professor in the Department of PMR, and a minimum of seven years of independent programmatic research with a track record of achievement in securing funding and publishing. Preferred qualifications include a collaborative research agenda crossing multiple disciplines and a history of secured funding from sources such as the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), National Institute of Health (NIH), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) or other similar Federal sources.
