The City of Tacoma, Environmental Services Department, has exciting opportunities for up to two Engineers in appointive positions. The City has the flexibility to fill these positions with either an entry level candidate (Associate Engineer) or an experienced candidate (Professional Engineer) that has a WA State Professional Engineering license. We are seeking outgoing, highly motivated individuals who are interested in diverse and challenging engineering projects to join our dynamic, award winning Environmental Services Team.
These positions will play an important role in the Capital Delivery Group of the Environmental Services Science and Engineering (ESSE) Division. These positions will collaborate and coordinate with the group's Assistant Division Manager and Principal Engineers on the planning, design, and construction management of capital improvement projects for the City's Wastewater, Surface Water and Solid Waste Utilities (approximate average annual Capital Improvement budget of $30 Million).
The ESSE Division provides a unique opportunity for engineers to work on a wide variety of complex capital improvement projects as they progress through their careers. The types of projects can cover the full spectrum of typical municipal infrastructure improvements associated with Wastewater, Surface Water, and Solid Waste Utilities and partnering with the City's Public Works Department and Tacoma Public Utilities. Being able to be involved in projects and programs from their inception through their full life is a unique and exiting component of working in the ESSE!
Depending on the background and professional interests of the successful applicant(s), these positions will focus on either of the following two areas:
Facility Capital Projects - Projects that include multiple engineering disciplines found in typical municipal utility facilities such as: wastewater treatment processes; wastewater and surface water pumping systems; and electrical and instrumentation systems
Collection System Projects – Projects that focus on the planning and design of municipal wastewater and surface water collection system capital improvements, including both open cut and trenchless technologies and associated roadway improvements as well as state of the art green infrastructure and innovative surface water management components

Scope definition, project accounting, preliminary design, construction estimating, team development and scheduling.
Preliminary to final design work, treatment process design, pumping and pipeline capacity analysis, site and utility condition assessment, permitting, plan sheets, technical specifications and quantity calculations.
Work closely with stakeholders, including public and private agencies, utilities, business and property owners, engineering consultants, and internal City stakeholders/team members to ensure an efficient and successful project.
Monitor project budgets, scope, schedule and workload of team members during design and construction.
Coordinate and partner with Environmental Services Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Division stakeholders to ensure the successful planning, design, and construction of facility capital projects. This particular activity is very important and crucial to the success of Environmental Services facility projects as there are a significant number of O&M stakeholders with a wide range of inputs and opinions. This particular activity requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Manage the work of private professional engineering consultants when these outside services are necessary to supplement in-house planning, design, and or construction management efforts.
Work closely with Asset Management staff to develop the scope of projects that comprise the Department's Capital Improvement Program.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
This is a professional environment with most activities occurring in an office setting with periodic field visits to active construction sites.
Periodic field work consists of in-the-field collaboration with Construction Managers and Inspectors that are part of each project's core team.
Position may require driving, sitting, standing, walking or climbing for long periods of time.
Bachelor of Science Degree in engineering, civil, mechanical, electrical engineering or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university,
A Professional Engineering License (PE) at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter (this only applies to those applicants that are intending to apply for the Professional Engineer classification; the Associate Engineer classification does not require a PE).
PREFERRED AND HIGHLY DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Four years of related engineering work experience in the water, wastewater or environmental field. Experience in municipal project design and construction management and municipal program management. Engineering experience related to municipal utilities facilities (such as wastewater treatment processes, wastewater and surface water pumping systems, and electrical and instrumentation systems). Engineering experience related to gravity conveyance systems.
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER LEGAL REQUIREMENTS: Current Washington State Driver's License at time of appointment.
