Specialist Engineer responsible for overhead transmission lines 69 kV to 500 kV. The successful candidate will be responsible for tasks including electromagnetic and electrostatic field calculations, AC interference, analyzing switching transients, transmission line grounding design, electrical clearances, lightning protection, transmission line insulation, corona effects, development of transmission line design standards. Special emphasis is on engineering studies for electrical safety of workers and the public.
The successful candidate will be required to:
Lead complex and/or high risk engineering studies related to safety of workers and the public;
Be responsible for tasks including electromagnetic and electrostatic field calculations, AC interference, analyzing switching transients, transmission line grounding design, electrical clearances, lightning protection, transmission line insulation, corona effects;
Identify opportunities to improve system design, performance and reliability through updates to existing and/or development of new transmission line design standards;
Provide technical leadership as an expert with broad and extensive knowledge of electrical safety standards (national and international), BC Hydro policies, practices and procedures;
Independently investigate, analyze and resolve a variety of challenging and unusual engineering problems.
Occasionally or, on a permanent basis, lead team(s) of highly qualified designers and/or diverse background to deliver on tasks of high risk/impact/complexity with cross-functional, cross organizational scope.
Sign and seal designs/reports, perform independent design checks and reviews of design work/ engineering studies completed by internal designers or external consultants and contractors for and on behalf of BC Hydro. Ensure accuracy, achievement of required results, and adherence to accepted engineering practice and BC Hydro design standards and specifications.
Engage in regular negotiations with internal/external clients and manage key relationships.
Comply with BC Hydro Safety by Design process and PPM practices in design deliverables.
Develop innovative engineering techniques, devise new approaches and apply existing criteria in novel ways.
Work effectively in a group environment with team members as well as staff from other disciplines in a manner that is consistent with design objective.
Develop and manage knowledge transfer to peers and junior staff to enhance internal knowledge base.
Manage client relationships to ensure their needs are met and to work closely with stakeholders to drive innovation, find engineering solutions that add value, address competing interests at least life cycle cost, and to reach consensus.
Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with internal and external colleagues in order to determine relative priorities, assess the impact of work on others and resolve issues of concern.
A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain your Driver's License: Class 5 In Good Standing.
Candidates with fewer years of relevant experience may be considered at a Senior Engineer level.
The successful candidate may be considered to take on a team lead role depending on future organizational structure.

The successful candidate will be required to work from the BC Hydro Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC, and shall be a Professional Engineer registered, or be eligible for immediate registration, with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC). Minimal travel to locations across the province may be required.
Electrical engineering degree with specialization and expertise in Power Systems.
Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. or M.A.Sc degrees. However, candidates with B.A.Sc. degree will be considered at a level commensurate with their relevant working experience.
Minimum of 12 years working experience in the electric power utility industry involving electrical safety aspects of high voltage transmission lines and other high voltage equipment. Experience must be relevant to all of the duties and qualifications for this position.
In depth technical knowledge of grounding software CDEGS (ROW Pro and HiFreq) and WinIGS, EMTP. Familiarity with COMSOL will be considered an asset.
In-depth knowledge of AC interference analysis and applicable standards and computer applications.
Working knowledge of and familiarity with national and international standards, design codes and guides such as IEEE 80, IEEE 81, IEEE 1243, IEEE 516, IEEE C95.6, CSA C22.3 No. 1, CSA C22.3 No. 6.
Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills, particularly technical writing in English language and ability to communicate with clarity complex technical matters to technical and nontechnical audiences.
