Duke seeks a world-class scholar to serve as chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering following the conclusion of its current chair's term in June 2022. The successful candidate must have the presence and academic credibility to lead some of the most preeminent faculty in the field, as well as the creativity and vision to head a department that is fundamental to the strategic priorities of the school and university. Duke University was created in 1924 through an indenture of trust by James Buchanan Duke and is regarded as one of the world's leading research universities. Located in Durham, North Carolina, Duke is positioned in the heart of the Research Triangle, which is ranked annually as one of the best places in the country to live and work. Duke has more than 15,000 students who study and conduct research in its 10 undergraduate, graduate and professional schools. With about 40,000 employees, Duke is the third-largest private employer in North Carolina, with international programs in more than 150 countries. Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering was founded in 1939. It is among the top 20 in research productivity among U.S. engineering schools (Academic A...nalytics) and ranks #12 among the top 25 overall U.S. engineering schools in research expenditures per faculty member according to U.S. News & World Report. It is home to more than 170 regular rank faculty, approximately 1,300 undergraduates, and almost 1,700 graduate students. In the past decade, external research funding has nearly doubled, with new awards to Duke Engineering rising by 43 percent in the past five years.
