The Department of Biomedical Engineering at UC Davis invites applications from qualified candidates for one or more Project Scientist positions in the laboratory of Professor Karen Moxon.
This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of an active research program in the research area of neural engineering, specifically related to the development of closed-loop neuromodulation system, including (but not limited to) deign of novel neural recording devices, neuromodulation devices and control algorithms.
Provide research and development engineering support on projects that require prototyping, engineering, and design of neural interface devices and systems.
Provide academic research support relevant to prototyping devices and/or algorithms and in-vivo testing.
Research and development activities include development of custom computer code to parse and analyze large data sets, implement control algorithms, and enable engineering testing circuits.
Establish performance specifications, experimental designs, and testing protocols. They will ensure complete and proper documentation of all work under their supervision.
The candidate will design specific experiments, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques, and will be responsible for carrying out the research (which may involve experimental, simulation and/or computational components), analyzing the data and critically interpreting the results. The candidate will supervise students and other technical staff regarding the technical aspects of the research, including methods development, training on proper and efficient use of scientific instrumentation, troubleshooting, data analysis, data interpretation.
Basic qualifications: Must have a Ph.D. in biology, neuroscience, engineering, the physical sciences or related discipline, or have advanced to candidacy in a Biomedical Engineering or related program. Must have a broad range of skills in neurophysiological techniques, preclinical studies, good interpersonal and organization skills, and strong communication (oral and written) skills.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering consists of the Department Chair, 1-2 Vice-Chairs, 36 ladder rank faculty (including WOS), approximately 115-120 other academic employees of varying titles, and 24 administrative and technical staff. The Department has ~550 undergraduate students enrolled, which have ABET accreditation status. The Department houses one graduate group with approximately 120 graduate students who can obtain a MS and/or PhD degree, as well as an integrated BS/MS program. The Department is responsible for oversight of CMGI research center and the new TEAM facilities and development activities. The current budget research funding level is in excess of $77 million (with an expenditure rate of about $19.7M). Biomedical Engineering has significant federal research funding (NIH, NSF, DOD, DOE) within the College of Engineering. The Department occupies 40,000 square feet of departmentally assigned space within a Garamendi Facility and 3 other buildings on campus.
The Department has 33 faculty members and is ranked 7th in the nation and 2nd in California in annual research expenditures (NSF rankings).
