Required Education:
Doctorate
The Nelms Lab at the University of Georgia (nelmslab.org) is seeking one or more postdoctoral researchers to join a collaborative and interdisciplinary group studying how developmental processes shape inheritance, cell identity, and evolution in plants. We combine genomics, genetics, microscopy, and high-throughput screening approaches to address fundamental questions in plant biology while developing new tools for crop improvement.
Current opportunities span two broad research areas, and we welcome candidates whose interests align with either:
Cell Fate Reprogramming
We are developing high-throughput approaches to discover transcription factors that can reprogram plant cell identity, with long-term goals including inducing meiosis and pollen formation from somatic cells and expanding regeneration capacity across grass species. We use a robotics-assisted platform for systematic TF functional screening in maize, with a survey of ~2,000 transcription factors currently underway. This work is supported by an NSF Plant Genome Research Program award. Candidates with experience in plant tissue culture, transformation, and/or developmental genetics are especially encouraged to apply. Project page: nelmslab.org/TFs
Gene Regulation and Genomics in the Haploid Phase
We study how gene expression is regulated during pollen development and how the haploid phase influences evolution, inheritance, and genome function. Ongoing projects investigate the mechanisms and evolutionary consequences of haploid genome activation (Science 375:424, 2022; Nature Communications 15:8352, 2024) and the development of pooled genetic screens in pollen—exploiting the direct link between haploid genotype and pollen phenotype to enable forward genetics at unprecedented scale. Candidates with experience in genomics, plant reproduction, microscopy, or developmental biology are especially encouraged to apply.
We welcome candidates interested in leading existing projects as well as those seeking to develop independent research directions aligned with the lab's broader interests.
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in plant biology, genetics, genomics, or a related field, with a strong record of research accomplishment and excellent communication skills. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment is valued. Positions are available on a rolling basis and will remain open until filled. Start dates are flexible.
To apply, please send a CV and a brief cover letter describing your research background and interests to Brad Nelms (nelms@uga.edu). Informal inquiries are welcome.
The Nelms Laboratory is part of the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Georgia. Our group studies how developmental processes shape genetic inheritance and cell identity in plants. The University of Georgia hosts a large and collaborative plant science community through the UGA Plant Center, providing extensive opportunities for interdisciplinary research. Athens offers the resources of a major research university within a vibrant and affordable college town.
